Patagonia Supports Friends
One look at Patagonia’s catalogue and you know that they not only produce the highest quality of outdoor clothing, but that they are dedicated to protecting the beauty and environmental integrity of places worldwide.
Friends for Our Riverfront (FfOR) feels honored that Patagonia has selected the Memphis riverfront as such a place. In cooperation with Outdoors, Inc., they have presented a conservation grant to FfOR to support our efforts to protect and revitalize the harbor and Public Promenade. We are very appreciative.
Friends is in the process of gathering information and public input about financially feasible ways to improve the promenade that will respect its environmental, historical, and cultural integrity and encourage recreational use of the park and harbor. The goal is to create a dynamic, beautiful space for Memphians and visitors that will connect the core of downtown to the Mississippi River.
For years Joe Royers of Outdoors Inc. has encouraged recreational use of the Mississippi River and Memphis harbor as well as hiking and biking in the area. His photographs and slide show presentations illustrate the area’s magnificent beauty and have encouraged many of us to "get out there" in person. As Royer says, the Rocky Mountains could have been considered a problem for development, but instead westerners have capitalized on their scenic beauty and recreational potential. Joe sees the River and riverfront as just such an opportunity.
On May 6 at 10 a.m., Outdoors Inc. will sponsor the 25th Annual Canoe and Kayak Race in Memphis. Voted the "Best Race" in America by "Paddler Magazine", the race attracts over 500 recreational to expert canoe and kayak paddlers from all over the world. The paddlers put in on the northern end of Mud Island and finish the race in Jefferson Davis Park where there will be music, booths, and food for spectators. Enter the race or join Joe and the folks from Outdoors Inc. at the finish. It’ll be a great opportunity to thank them for their support and enjoy the beauty and potential of our riverfront.
